4 Ways to Make Fido Happy in Your New Home

Remodeling your home, or even constructing a new home, is a stressful process—we’ve even talked about how to cope with the stress of a remodel on our blog before—but even during the hard times, you can’t forget about man’s best friend. Living with pets is one of life’s many blessings—so, what can you do in your new home to make Fido feel at ease?

We’ve tracked down a few projects to add to your next home improvement rush that will make your dog (or cat!) feel included.

1. Upgrade your gates.

Have a small-puppy? Thinking about adding another to the family? Pet gates—the plastic ones you can pick up at your local pet store—can be useful, but unsightly. Wouldn’t you rather have something that matches your home’s aesthetic and integrates seamlessly with the current design? Installing a custom-designed gate for your living or kitchen area can be a great way to keep Fido in the right rooms without the added clutter.

2. Add on pet-friendly kitchen storage.

While you’re building a new home or upgrading your current one, consider how your dog fits into the kitchen space. Want to keep food and water bowls out of sight? Don’t want a giant dog food bag lounging near the refrigerator or on the pantry floor? Consider adding on deeper cabinets or a single large pull-out storage drawer for all pet-related items.

3. Convert a bathroom into a bathing station.

If you have a little bit of extra room, consider building your pet their own bathing station. Forget messy baths in your garden tub. Instead, convert an unused powder room into a pet bathing station. You can replace your old tub, sink, or shower with a walk-in design for easy access and add-on a large drain that won’t get clogged with pet hair.

4. Consider building an outdoor ramp.

Older dogs (especially those that are prone to hip problems) may find it difficult to climb stairs as they age. To keep Fido happy, consider building an outdoor ramp for an easy way to the outdoors. Even if your dog is younger, a ramp will help them avoid early joint damage from walking repeatedly up and down stairs.
