How to Avoid Stress During a Home Remodel

When it comes to home remodeling, there are a number of things that can go awry. Maybe the builder forgets to order the extra bathroom tile you requested. Or, the plank flooring you loved is backordered until December. Remodeling is stressful. With lots of decisions to be made, you might feel a bit overwhelmed. From writing endless checks to the sound of sawing at 6 a.m., home renovations are sure to drive anyone batty. Here’s how to best handle the stress of a home remodel.

Hire the right contractor.

First and foremost, the best way to avoid stress during a home remodel is to hire the right help. Hiring a competent and experienced home renovation company is the best move you can make. If you’re asking yourself questions such as “what permits do I need?” or, “how do I know my property can withstand an addition?” a home addition contractor can help. Hiring the wrong contractor, however, may leave you in a mess. Here’s how to find the right one.

Review all costs upfront.

If there’s a lack of transparency during your initial meeting with a contractor, run for the hills. Nothing is more stressful than being slapped with extra charges and unforeseen costs after construction has ceased. Make sure to ask, in writing, for all costs upfront. Ask to be alerted to changes in subcontractor costs, delays in construction, and transportation costs as well. Establishing regular budget check-in meetings can be a great way to manage costs and avoid surprises—we recommend a weekly meeting with the contractor or project manager during construction.

Be realistic about timing.

Sometimes remodels can take longer than expected. Bad weather, excessive traffic, backordered products, and general life experiences can get in the way of a deadline. Make sure you’re realistic about timing and not pushing for an early turnaround. To avoid the stress of an untimely completion, you can insist upon using subcontractors that have open schedules or plan to remodel during the off-season (when contractors have less on their plates!).

Avoid making excessive changes.

If you’ve ever completed a home renovation before, you might be guilty of this one. It’s easy to forget little things at the start and want to add them in along the way. Excessive changes, however, can cause stress for you and the project manager. Changing types of materials, appliances, and design can be costly and take more time.

Communicate with everyone.

Make sure everyone is on the same page throughout the project. Do you and your husband want the same tile in the kitchen? Is that being relayed professionally to the project manager? Create a clear and consistent communication channel—through email, regular meetings, or phone calls—and keep track of conversations. Make these notes available to everyone involved so nothing slips through the cracks!
