8 Common Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

Remodeling your home can be overwhelming—especially if you’re working on a whole-house remodel or adding on additional space. It’s so important to not get caught up in the excitement or stressed out by all the decision making...because that can lead you to make some serious mistakes. Here let’s discuss 8 common remodeling mistakes and how you can avoid them.

1. Choosing appliances last

You wouldn’t want to design a kitchen with a refrigerator area that’s too small or too wide, would you? You may think layout and design are the most important elements to recreating your home, but the devil is in the details. Remember, not all appliances are created equal. If you’re upgrading, make sure you’re accounting for the size of your new appliances and measuring appropriately.

2. Not budgeting appropriately

A bigger mistake, however, is biting off more than you can chew. Before planning a home remodel, take a hard look at your finances. What can you afford? What’s your absolute maximum budget? Once you discover those things about yourself, then look to design, space, layouts, appliances, and types of projects. You never want to find yourself half way through a remodel with no funds to complete it.

3. Going it alone

Are you the DIY type? Love figuring out home improvement projects on your own? Everyone loves a handyman, but a big mistake is not consulting the experts for major remodeling projects. Unless you work in construction or renovations yourself, you might miss what a professional will be able to help fine-tune. It’s always a good idea to get a second set of eyes on any project.

4. Not hiring the right contractor

Like appliances, home remodeling contractors are not created equal either. Some are more talented than others; others are more organized than some. Decide what you want from a contractor and ask the tough questions. If they’re too afraid to answer them or divert your attention elsewhere, find a new contractor before you start work.

5. Rushing the process

Home renovations take time. Depending on the project, weather, holidays, permits, and materials all have the potential to delay construction. Don’t rush the process. Trying to speed up contractors might get you your renovation ahead of schedule, but it also might mean they cut corners. Best way to remedy this? Keep in touch with your construction manager and ensure them that you care most about a quality finished product.

6. Following trends

Love Home and Garden magazine? Live your life on Pinterest? You might be tempted to follow the latest home decor fashions. Think before you do this because it can be a mistake. Not all trends stand the test of time, so ask yourself what’s classic and what you’ll regret in 5 years.

7. Not getting the right permits

Whether you choose to remodel yourself or hire a contractor, you need to make sure you attain the right permits. This is vital to the success of any home remodeling project. Why? Because if you don’t and your neighbors report your construction, you may have to tear it all down. In most cities and counties, building without a permit is a violation and they will, indeed, make you start over from scratch. Think about all the money you’ll have wasted? Get a permit ASAP.

8. Cutting Corners

Last but not least, a big mistake with home remodeling is cutting corners. Think of your renovation as an investment, not just an upgrade. You want to make sure your home will hold its value (and that all of the money and time you’ve put into a remodel is worth it). How do you avoid cutting corners? Don’t buy cheap materials, make sure to install quality windows, and never settle for less than ideal fixtures.

Another way you could potentially cut corners is by hiring unlicensed contractors. It’s a bad idea and the savings aren’t worth the trouble they can cause.
