5 Smart Exterior Projects for Spring

You’ve finished up your indoor cleaning and refreshed the house for the season—but what can you do on the outside this spring to prepare for summer? Here are a few simple maintenance jobs (plus, some fun projects to consider). All will help cut down on moisture, prevent costly repairs, and create a home that’s summer-ready inside and out.

5 Smart Exterior Projects to Take on This Spring

Clean the gutters.

April showers bring May flowers, right? Cleaning your gutters will help make sure they’re prepared for heavy downpours and the summer’s hurricane season. Not to mention, routine cleaning of your gutters (i.e. two times per year) can help you prevent damage to your roof and foundation—saving you thousands in possible roof repair costs.

Repaint.

Inspect your home’s exterior—does it look like it needs a new paint job? Exposed wood from chipped paint can rot over time, leaving you with a mess to repair. To find any chips in your paint, take a Saturday to pressure wash your home's exterior. See any major spots that need repainting? Take the time to touch up patches of chipped paint with a fresh coat before they become major issues.

Inspect the roof.

While you’re outside working around the house, inspect the roof. Visually inspect any signs of wear and tear and document what you see. What are you looking for exactly? Start by inspecting the shingles. Do they all appear to be intact or are you missing a few? Also, look for cracked caulk, missing chimney caps, buckling shingles, and patches of moss growth.

Check foundation vents.

Does your home have a crawl space? Now is the time to check your foundation vents and ensure they are in good working order. If you’ve closed them off for winter, open them back up—these vents provide air circulation that will help dissipate excess moisture and prevent mold growth during the warmer months of the year. Also, look for any holes or tears in the vent screens. If found, you’ll want to replace these to prevent critters from moving in.

Consider a remodel.

Spring is also a great time to start planning ahead for future home renovations, repairs, and complete remodels. Thinking about enhancing your home with a new bonus room? Want to expand your back patio to include an enclosed sunroom? Now is the time to make that call.
