Winter is the best time to remodel your home.
When you set out to pursue a home remodeling project, you likely imagine a spring or summer start date. That’s a valid thought.
Just coming off the heels of the holiday season and in the midst of the last cold months of the year, home improvement probably isn’t at the forefront of your mind. But do you want to know a secret? Winter can actually be the absolute best time of year to complete all those renovation projects you’ve been sitting on. Still not so sure? Here are 3 reasons why winter is a great time to remodel your home.
1. Contractors Have More Availability
Contractors have more time to think, plan, and give your project their undivided attention in the winter. Business is simply not as in demand at this time of year. On the other hand, everyone wants a fresh start once we’re greeted with warmer weather—and that includes planning for a home remodel.
March through September is the absolute busiest time for contractors (and the most expensive time for you to remodel!). If you’re looking for more one-on-one attention with your contractor, winter is actually the most ideal time.
2. You Can Avoid Price Increases
Contractors know their busiest months are from March to September. During this time of year, standard rates will apply to all services — very seldom will a homeowner seeking out a remodel project in the spring or summer receive any special deals. But the wintertime is a different story. There are a lot more opportunities to work with reputable contractors at a reduced rate in the winter simply because they have less on their plate and want to fill their time with meaningful work. This coincides with the first reason aforementioned.
Supplies manufacturers in the home remodeling business also understand the cyclical nature of renovations. New product lines and upgrades typically come out during the spring. To clear their shelves in the colder months, they often reduce the cost of their out-of-season products for contractors in their network.
In essence, a winter home remodel equals a cheaper home remodel!
3. Faster Approval Rating
Remodeling a home doesn’t stop with the contractor—you’ve got to get all the right permits, too. Local governments are notoriously slow to approve these types of things when the busy season comes along. Working with a contractor and the local governments on permit approvals will be much easier during the colder months of the year. Again, there is less work to do so you won’t get stuck on the end of an endless waitlist.
If you’re working on a major home remodel, it’s also much easier to find and schedule an inspector to come visit this time of year. When all of these red-tape processes move quicker, you can count on completing your home remodel in a shorter period of time.
